Roads Scholar #1:
Basics of a Good Road
About the Course
This course provides basic information on construction and maintenance of locally owned roads, aimed at helping agency personnel to better manage and operate their road networks.
Topics include:
Design considerations
Road surface materials, methods
Maintenance of flexible and rigid pavements
Factors affecting good road performance, such as weather, drainage, geometry, and traffic
Road features such as shoulders, ditches, culverts, and bridges
Maintaining safe roadsides
Traffic control consideration
Introduction to asset management
Who should attend:
This course is intended for all levels of road maintenance and construction personnel. The principles taught will provide a foundation for more detailed instruction contained in other Roads Scholar series courses.

Nicholas “Nick” Verret, Jr. P.E.
Mr. Verret has been a registered professional engineer in Louisiana since 1984. Following a 31+ year career with the Louisiana DOTD in the areas of highway construction, design, and administration, he served as the LTAP Program Manager from October 2011 until December 2012. He was later appointed as Director of Public Works for the Parish of Natchitoches until stepping down from that position in July 2017. Mr. Verret currently serves as City Engineer for the City of Natchitoches where he has developed pavement management programs for both the city and the parish.

Professional Development Hours (PDHs)
Professional Development Hour (PDH) credit will be awarded as follows: six (6) PDHs for RS#1. LTRC is a Louisiana State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, approved Sponsor/Provider of Continuing Professional Development.
