Roads Scholar #14:
Bridge Maintenance & Repair
About the Course
Louisiana has hundreds of locally owned bridges that require routine maintenance and costly repairs to remain operational. Many commercial and in-house repairs do not meet the level of acceptable practices and/or render structures to be impossible to inspect. This class incorporates DOTD guidance on best practices and all bridge owners are encouraged to attend.
Participants will learn the following skills related to local bridge maintenance and repair:
- Identify bridge types and components
- To develop basic programs for routine, preventative, and proactive bridge maintenance
- To incorporate preventative maintenance into agency work plans and budgets
- To identify signs of deterioration that lead to damage resulting in load restrictions or closures
- Select and implement cost effective repairs that follow best practices and are acceptable as part of the NBIS compliance
- Select the best maintenance techniques for other bridge features such as waterways, approach roadways, and safety appurtenancesThis class is recommended for Parish and Local Agency Engineers, Managers, Supervisors and Employees who direct or conduct maintenance or repair of locally owned bridges.
